SEPTA to purchase 104 Silverliner cars for $244 million

advertisement

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) will purchase 104 Silverliner V regional rail cars from United Transit Systems L.L.C. for $244.2 million. The contract includes an option to purchase up to 16 additional vehicles.

United Transit Systems, a consortium comprising Sojitz Corp. of America and Rotem Co., is expected to deliver three pilot cars 30 months after SEPTA issues a notice to proceed; all cars are scheduled to be in service four years after the notice is issued.

The new cars will feature larger windows, wider aisles, a state-of-the-art climate control system and improved seating arrangements.

SEPTA plans to retire 73 Silverliner II and Silverliner III cars, which have operated since the 1960s.
