Rail News: Mechanical
Bombardier Transportation recently obtained a $473 million contract to provide 234 subway cars, spare parts and additional equipment to the Toronto Transit Commission.
Scheduled to be delivered between 2009 and 2011, the cars will feature open gangways so passengers can walk from one end of the train to the other — the first vehicles in North American to feature such a configuration, according to Bombardier.
In addition, the cars will include electronic information systems to provide automated station announcements; a subway map that shows travel direction, tells passengers which station is next and identifies which side of the train doors will open at the station; and onboard cameras and a two-way intercom system for passengers to contact the train operator.
