The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority this week approved an updated design for Tri-Rail trains, the rolling stock's first new look since 2001.
The agency will rewrap the exterior of 12 locomotives and 49 rail cars that originally were to be replaced, Tri-Rail officials said in a press release. Because of the railroad's pending expansion of service to Miami and other initiatives to improve train service, the SFRTA board instead decided to create a new design for the locomotives and vehicles, they said.
The locomotives are slated to have new engines installed over the next two years, while the passenger cars are part of a project that will rehab restrooms, repair seats and replace floors.
Dubbed "On Track," the new design incorporates Tri-Rail's logo colors through sky blue, orange and green arrows and stripes on a dark blue background.
"The design was chosen to make it easy to overlay advertising opportunities that can help garner additional revenue for the agency," said SFRTA Chair Raquel Regalado. "We expect it to be a hot commodity for vendors wanting to advertise in South Florida, as much as the service will be for the public when Tri-Rail trains are running in downtown Miami."
