By year end, Union Pacific Railroad will upgrade more than 2,600 50-foot refrigerated box cars to accommodate growing frozen product traffic, such as french fries, meat, poultry and dairy items. The Class I handles more than 48,000 refrigerated and frozen product shipments annually.
UP owns the nation’s largest refrigerated-car fleet at more than 5,500 units, according to the railroad. Since 2003, the Class I has purchased 1,500 64-foot refrigerated box cars, which are designed to hold up to 40 percent more freight compared with a conventional refrigerated car. The cars feature Global Positioning Satellite monitoring systems to track location and keep tabs on temperature, fresh-air exchange and diagnostics.
