UP orders four 'genset' switchers from Railpower

Union Pacific Railroad is increasing the size of its “green” yard locomotive fleet in California. The Class I recently ordered four generator-set (genset), environmentally friendly locomotives from Railpower Technologies Corp.

To be delivered in first-quarter 2008, the six-axle RP-series switchers are designed to meet California’s strict air emission standards and reduce fuel usage.

“This order is in line with our strategy of expanding our multi-genset Eco-Motive product range and paves the way for future orders,” said Railpower President and Chief Executive Officer José Mathieu in a prepared statement.

In April, Railpower obtained an order from Norfolk Southern Corp. for kits used to convert two switchers to RP-Series units.
