Union Pacific Railroad recently introduced the “Katy” locomotive to honor predecessor railroad the Missouri-Kansas-Texas and its workers.

The Katy is the latest addition to the Class I’s Heritage Series locomotives, which feature historic colors and graphic elements to honor the workers and railroads that helped form today’s UP. Formed in 1865, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad or Katy served six Midwestern states and operated more than 3,370 track miles when UP acquired the road in 1988. The Class I initially will operate the locomotive within the Katy’s former territory.

In July, UP unveiled Heritage Series locomotives honoring the Missouri Pacific and Western Pacific railroads. Next year, the Class I plans to introduce commemorative locomotives for the Chicago & North Western, Southern Pacific, and Denver & Rio Grande railroads.

“The creation of our Heritage Series is just one way we can pay homage to those railroads, and the generations of men and women who helped to build a great nation and the foundation for our future,” said UP Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dick Davidson in a prepared statement.
