USDOT's Volpe Center acquires two GenSet locomotives from National Railway Equipment
advertisement
The Volpe National Transportation Systems Center recently purchased two N-ViroMotive™ GenSet locomotives from National Railway Equipment Co.
The 2,100-horsepower, four-axle units will be contracted to the U.S. Army’s rail program within the Tank-Automotive & Armaments Command (TACOM). Governed by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Volpe Center manages transportation equipment acquisitions for the army.
Under a 20-year rail modernization program, the army is replacing older locomotives with newer, environmentally friendly power.
N-ViroMotive locomotives are designed to reduce air emissions between 50 percent and 80 percent, and cut fuel usage between 35 percent and 50 percent compared with a conventional switcher.
