Transtar LLC subsidiary Union Railroad Co. (URR) has opened its newest freight-car repair shop in North America.

Located in an industrial district in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, the facility was constructed through a public/private partnership between the short line and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission as part of the construction of the Mon Fayette Expressway.

The new shop offers full freight-car repair services, and features a storage capacity of 500 rail cars, and connections to CN, CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and several regional carriers. The facility can perform heavy repairs onsite and provide mobile repair services to support rail needs in the region, Transtar officials said in a press release.

“The new car shop will strengthen [our] growing network of rail operations across North America and provide a more efficient ‘one-stop-shop’ for customers and rail-car owners,” said Transtar President and CEO Jonathan Carnes.

URR’s 128-mile network serves a 10-mile radius in the greater Pittsburgh area. The short line also provides car storage, locomotive repair and transload services.

Transtar owns and operates six short lines, including the Delray Connecting Railroad Co., East Ohio Valley Railway, Fairfield Southern Co., Gary Railway Co., Lake Terminal Railroad Co. and Texas & Northern Railway Co.
