The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Operations Board on May 21 will consider recommending that VRE's parent commissions authorize Chief Executive Officer Rich Dalton to execute a contract with Alstom Transportation Inc. for 21 passenger-rail cars for $84.6 million.

The multilevel 148-seat rail cars are 100% compatible and interoperable with the agency's existing fleet and include enhanced passenger amenities, VRE officials said in a press release.

Also on Friday, the board will consider referring the amended fiscal-year 2022 operating budget to VRE’s parent commissions for consideration and approval. The budget would provide financial relief to the nine jurisdictions that contribute to commuter-rail operations, the result of pandemic-related federal support for public transportation.
