Valley Metro Rail and the Refrigeration School Inc. (RSI) have established a customized training program that provides certification for maintaining HVAC equipment on the agency's light-rail cars.

So far, seven maintenance technicians have earned their HVAC certification by completing the five-week, 100-hour training course, Valley Metro officials said in a press release.

Scheduled around the workers' regular shifts, the classes are conducted at the agency's rail operations and maintenance center.

"As one of the few light-rail systems operating regularly in 100-plus degree heat, Valley Metro Rail requires a workforce with specialized knowledge and skills," said Ken Raghunandan, light-rail vehicle maintenance superintendent for Valley Metro Rail.

Founded in Phoenix in 1965, RSI has been training students for HVAC careers for more than 50 years.
