Wheeling & Lake Erie rolls out Johnstown America's specially built aggregate cars

Earlier this month, the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Co. (W&LE) took delivery of 50 aggregate cars from Johnstown America Corp.

The car builder converted steel rapid-discharge coal cars into the smaller cubic capacity aggregate cars by cutting a two-hopper, 13-foot long center section out of the five-hopper coal cars, reassembling the cars and refurbishing the automatic-discharge mechanism. The resulting triple-hopper cars now are certified at 286,000-pound gross rail load capacity.

"These cars work very well for us hauling stone and aggregates, an important part of our railroad’s business," said W&LE Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Larry Parsons in a prepared statement.

Johnstown America produces aluminum coal, flat, mill gondola and heavy-haul intermodal cars, as well as the AVC aluminum motor vehicle carrier and VersaCoil™ steel-coil car. The company also rebuilds various cars.
