CTA to replace Church Street viaduct in suburban Chicago

This year, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will continue its Purple Line viaduct replacement program by building a new Church Street viaduct in Evanston, Ill.

The century-old structure is the second of six bridges along the line slated for replacement. Located one block north of Davis Station, the concrete viaduct has deteriorated, requiring trains to reduce speed when crossing it.

CTA will build a steel structure, and install new abutments, retaining walls, foundations, and waterproofing and drainage systems. The project also calls for replacing ties, and improving lighting and landscaping under the bridge.

The authority recently began accepting construction bids; a construction schedule will be announced after a contractor is selected.

Last year, CTA replaced the Purple Line’s Main Street viaduct.
