In January 2008, Union Pacific Railroad expects to complete a $8.2 million track improvement project between Des Moines, Iowa, and Kansas City, Mo.

The project calls for removing and installing 55,400 ties, spreading 10,700 tons of ballast, replacing surfaces at 31 grade crossings and replacing 2.5 miles of rail on curves.

Crews currently are replacing 33,000 ties between Williamson and Chariton, Iowa. In early November, workers will begin replacing 22,400 ties between Lock Springs and Tindall, Mo.

The project, which began in January, is part of UP’s $1.5 billion capital spending program for 2007.
