NS, state DOT complete passing siding at North Carolina Railroad yard

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and Norfolk Southern Railway recently completed a passing siding in North Carolina Railroad Co.'s East Durham yard for freight and passenger trains to help reduce congestion and train delays.

The $6.5 million project called for building 12,200 feet of main track, converting existing track into a passing siding, and realigning track to straighten curves and accommodate maximum train speeds of 79 mph. Crews also installed train-control signals and electronically controlled switches at each end of the siding so local trains can quickly exit the main track.

NCDOT developed the primary design and oversaw the construction process; NS developed final plans and constructed the siding.
