Rehabilitation work began Monday on a $36.8 million initiative to bring six MTA Metro-North Railroad stations into a state of good repair on the New Haven Line.

Crews began working on the Mount Vernon East, Pelham and New Rochelle stations this week, and will begin working on the Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Harrison stations in summer 2013, MTA Metro-North officials said in a prepared statement.

Major work will be done on the platform superstructure, including the double "T" beams, bearing pads, concrete piers, concrete footings, edge board and wearing surface. In addition, tactile warning strips will be installed.

Also undergoing rehabilitation work are platform canopy structures, pigeon-proofing, canopy and platform lighting, platform guardrail replacement, overpass and underpass structures, stairs, ramps, public address systems, visual message signage, wire mesh benches and bicycle racks.

Rehabilitation work will be performed under three separate contracts, two of which will be let through the MTA Small Business Mentoring Program that teaches small business subcontractors how to become general contractors.
