Later this week, Union Pacific Railroad plans to begin a $2 million project designed to replace track running through Penn Tunnel in Portland, Ore.

Scheduled to begin on Nov. 16 and conclude five days later, the project calls for replacing the existing rail inside the tunnel, which is slightly more than one mile in length. The existing track will be removed in 40-foot segments and new track will be installed by a track laying machine. In addition, 3,600 tons of ballast will be replaced inside the tunnel.

A 100-member crew will perform work 24 hours a day during the project to minimize impacts on the community and the Class I's operations, UP officials said in a prepared statement.

The project is part of UP's $3.6 billion capital spending plan for 2012.
