Later this month, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) plans to begin a $7 million restoration and improvement of the Red Line's "S-curve."

Delta Railroad Construction Inc. will perform the work, which will involve a 3,000-foot section of the Windermere-to-the-Airport Red Line built in 1955, GCRTA officials said in a prepared statement.

The work will begin April 21 and is expected to be completed by June 7, they said. TranSystems' Cleveland office completed the project's design.

The track curves in one direction, then the other as it ascends from the West 98th Street Station to the West 117th Street Station. The project will entail cleaning and replacing portions of the S-curve's drainage system; repairing and strengthening retaining walls and one bridge abutment; installing new rails, ties and ballast; and adjusting the overhead power system to align with the new track.

The existing drainage system in the S-curve isn't working properly, GCRTA officials said. Portions of the track are constantly wet and water flows from one section of the track to another, they added.

"This is a vital upgrade to our Red Line rail system," said General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Joe Calabrese.
