The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will soon begin a $20 million track and station improvement project on the southern Green Line to prepare for an increase in riders related to the five-month reconstruction of the Red Line South.
Work that has been or will be completed by May includes improvements and temporary expansion of two Green Line stations, and significant track and signal upgrades beginning south of Roosevelt at several locations along the Green Line to eliminate emerging slow zones that could impact and reduce travel times, CTA officials said in a prepared statement.
The improvements will enable Green Line tracks and stations to accommodate additional trains during the $425 million Red Line South project, which involves rebuilding the Red Line between Cermak/Chinatown and 95th Street beginning May 19.
CTA officials estimate the number of riders served along the Green Line each weekday during the Red Line project could quadruple to more than 50,000.
The Green Line improvements also will benefit riders for the long term by improving service reliability and reducing delays, agency officials said.
