The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) and MTA Metro-North Railroad have signed a "partnering letter" spelling out a management approach and working relationships needed to advance a project to replace the Walk Bridge.
The 120-year-old, four-track structure carries Metro-North's New Haven line trains over the Norwalk River and is "key link" in the Northeast Corridor, CTDOT officials said in a press release. When the bridge fails to close properly, it causes significant disruptions for both commuters and mariners. The letter includes schedules of meetings between various parties to maintain communication and informed decision-making during the project, according to the department."This complex project requires meticulous planning and effective communications between the DOT and Metro-North so that everyone has adequate input and consistent information," said CTDOT Commissioner James Redeker.Additionally, CTDOT and Metro-North are willing to consider "any and all reasonable opportunities to accelerate the work program," the letter stated.Three related construction projects are necessary before replacement of the bridge can start in mid-2018.Amtrak, CSX and Providence and Worcester Railroad also use the Walk Bridge.
