The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) last week approved $20,000 in grant funding for trespass prevention projects around railroad tracks in Kent, Washington.
UTC approved the Grade Crossing Protective Fund grants at the city of Kent's request for fencing in areas where pedestrians have trespassed over railroad tracks, according to a UTC press release.
The city requested $10,000 to install about 250 feet of 6-foot chain-link fencing and a gate to be located about one-third of a mile north of the East James Street crossing; and $10,000 to install about 330 feet of 6-foot chain-link fencing in two locations about 100 feet south of the South Willis Street crossing.
The fencing will restrict track access and guide pedestrians to each of the fully signalized crossings.
The upgrades must be completed by June 15, 2019. The city of Kent will cover additional costs over the approved grant amounts, including labor, associated with the upgrades.
