The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has begun a project to replace the Route 3 Bridge over Conrail and New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway (NYSW) tracks, and the ramp from Route 3 west to Route 495 east in North Bergen, New Jersey.
The $24.8 million project is federally funded through a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant issued in 2018. The project will address the bridge's poor condition and geometric deficiencies, NJDOT officials said in a press release.
The new, wider bridge will consist of two 12-foot lanes, a 4-foot left shoulder and a 10-foot minimum right shoulder in each direction. The existing roadway will be widened to the south to accommodate the wider bridge.
NJDOT officials described the new bridge as a single span structure that will be about 156 feet long with a minimum vertical clearance of 23 feet over the tracks. Using a single-span design will eliminate the piers adjacent to the railroad tracks, which will improve rail service by allowing freight trains to travel at higher speeds and transport higher and wider loads.
Eliminating the existing pier also will create increased spacing between the tracks, which is required to provide shared passenger and freight service.
The entire project will be constructed in five stages, with an expected completion date of summer 2023.
