Burlington Northern Santa Fe will play a role in developing an industrial park near its Stockton, Calif., intermodal facility.

The railroad will spend $350,000 to install a switch and build 520 feet of track from its mainline to the proposed 106-acre Duck Creek Commerce Park. A $447,000 federal grant will fund construction of an additional 1,000 feet of track into the park.

Duck Creek is the first phase of a planned 1,000-acre logistics park, which would be similar to BNSF-served parks in Chicago and Alliance, Texas. Duck Creek will anchor one end of the development; the Class I's intermodal facility, the other.

The city of Stockton plans to use a $5.9 million U.S. Economic Development Administration grant to build water-supply facilities for the logistics park. Rail and water infrastructure projects are expected to create about 16,550 jobs by 2013, according to a prepared statement.
