Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in July will begin a three-month project to replace and rebuild a nearly 50-year-old interlocking and other track components south of the agency's station in Hayward, California.
The scope of the project includes replacing four track switches, 700 worn wooden ties with concrete ones, 1,000 tons of rock ballast and 1,400 feet of electric third rail.
The work also includes installation of about 4,000 feet of rail; 400 feet of duct banks, conduit and cabling; new power lines and platform tiles at Hayward Station.
Work will require five weekend shutdowns of the track between Bay Fair and South Hayward stations. Buses will replace train service.
Meanwhile, BART will eliminate paper ticket sales at five more stations, including: Dublin/Pleasanton, Coliseum, Oakland International Airpot, Montgomery Street and Civic Center stations.
Starting the week of June 8, one station per week will be converted to Clipper-only sales. Clipper is BART’s reusable, reloadable fare card.
