Caltrain later today will host a virtual public meeting to share details of its proposed replacement of the Guadalupe River Bridge in San Jose, California.
Still in the planning stage, the $33 million project would entail replacing one rail bridge and extending another over the Guadalupe River north of Tamien commuter-rail station.
The northbound bridge will be replaced with a concrete structure to meet current structural design standards and seismic criteria.The southbound bridge requires an extension on the southern end to reduce river flow speeds and riverbank erosion, Caltrain officials said in a press release.
The Federal Transit Administration is providing 80% of the project's funding.
Construction will begin in 2022 and is expected to take two years to complete.
In addition to Caltrain's passenger service, the railroad bridges are used by Union Pacific Railroad, Amtrak and the Altamont Commuter Express.
