MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) next month will begin the next phase of rehabilitation work on the Rutgers Tube subway tunnels, which were damaged during Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
The twin tubes, which run between the East Broadway Station in Manhattan and the York Street Station in Brooklyn on the F Subway line, are the last tubes to be rehabilitated as part of MTA’s post-Sandy reconstruction work.
Infrastructure improvements will include installation of new track, power and communication cables, signal equipment and tunnel lighting systems. MTA crews also will install additional cellular service in the tunnels and improve accessibility at East Broadway Station.
Crews also will improve the tunnels' pumping system, which was impacted by more than 1.5 million gallons of water during the 2012 storm, MTA officials said in a press release.
Work will be conducted on nights and weekends, and is slated to be substantially completed in April 2021.
During the project's first phase earlier this year, MTA replaced over 9,000 linear feet of track with continuously welded rail, installed about 7,500 linear feet of a cable management rack system, and completed demolition and leak mitigation at East Broadway Station.
