Conrail leaders earlier this month hosted a congressional staff visit to view the Point-No-Point Bridge replacement project in Kearny, New Jersey.
Built in 1901, the Point-No-Point Bridge crosses the Passaic River between Newark and Kearny. It serves as a vital freight artery, moving almost 7,000 containers and providing goods for over 125 million consumers annually. The bridge replacement impacts Port Authority Trans-Hudson and Amtrak trains traveling along the Northeast Corridor.
Launched in May, the bridge replacement project has created 110 new prevailing wage union jobs in New Jersey, according to a press release issued on behalf of Conrail.
Joseph Sgroi, project specialist from U.S. Sen. Cory Booker’s (D-N.J.) office, and Rudy Rodas, state director for U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), spent the mornings of Nov. 1 and 2 learning about critical supply-chain infrastructure at the bridge. Also joining the tour were leaders from Norfolk Southern Railway, CSX and members of United Steelworkers of American and Heavy and General Laborers Local 472.
Replacing the bridge will also benefit the Passaic River Superfund remediation by preventing additional truck congestion carrying contaminated dredged silt through local communities, Conrail officials said.
