The Washington State Department of Transportation has awarded a $5 million grant to the city of Spokane Valley for a grade separation project at Pines Road.

The grant will fund the construction of an underpass at a grade crossing owned by BNSF Railway Co., as well as a roundabout at a nearby intersection to reroute traffic, said officials from the office of State Sen. Mike Padden (R-Spokane Valley).

The crossing has been a concern for the state and was named a “conflict” location because of delayed emergency vehicles and traffic congestion. An average of 67 trains every day block traffic at the crossing for more than a combined 3.5 hours, according to Padden's office.

"These improvements are incredibly important to Spokane Valley and the surrounding region because they offer so many benefits: fewer collisions, less congestion, better emergency access, a boost to economic development and more," Padden said.
