Yesterday, Pennsylvania officials marked the reopening of a 16-mile rail line in Indiana County.

Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad Inc. (B&P) will use the line — which was closed for 12 years — to deliver coal to the Homer City Generating Station. To rehabilitate the line, B&P installed 16 miles of continuous-welded rail, 41,000 ties and 10 switches, upgraded 34 public and private grade crossings, constructed five bridge decks and laid 30,000 tons of ballast.

The short line, Federal Railroad Administration and state funded the $9.6 million project.

The B&P line will remove 80,000 trucks from the region’s highways, said Gov. Edward Rendell in a prepared statement.
