A section of the Alaska Railroad shut down north of Denali Park late last week after a retaining wall eroded.

Located in Healy Canyon, the wall failed because the lower slope slipped due to saturated soil from recent heavy rains. Passenger and freight service will remain suspended at least through today, railroad officials said in a press release.

Crews have been mobilizing equipment to begin making repairs on the wall, which will include driving pilings and sheet pile to fortify the structure and prevent further erosion, Alaska Railroad officials said.

Passenger-rail service in the area is facing delays. Motor coach service around the affected area will be provided to passengers arriving or departing Fairbanks.
