BNSF Railway Co. is halfway toward its goal of completing four “Thayer South Expansion” projects in Arkansas and Tennessee to increase velocity and expand capacity to handle growing traffic volume, especially for coal.

In March, the Class I began extending a siding in Baker, Ark., to accommodate longer coal trains; building a siding in Marked Tree, Ark.; extending double track 3.25 miles in Critco, Ark.; and improving an interlocker in Memphis, Tenn.

BNSF has completed the Baker and Critco projects; the railroad plans to finish the Marked Tree project in January and the Memphis project in March.
