CN improving mainline to reduce freight, passenger transit times

On Oct. 23, Canadian National Railway Co. announced its spending $24.2 million to upgrade a Halifax, Nova Scotia-to-Montreal mainline to improve transit times for CN and VIA Rail Canada Inc. trains, and on-time performance for shippers using the Port of Halifax.
To be completed this fall, the project includes extending four sidings ($9.2 million); improving track, bridges, and signals and communications ($15 million); and reconstructing a Halifax auto compound's wharf area ($4.5 million).
"The siding initiative will ensure we improve our service edge, [which is] critical to the ability of the Port of Halifax to attract overseas container traffic moving to and from the heart of the continent," said Keith Heller, CN senior vice president, Eastern Canada Region, in a prepared statement.
