Later this month, CSX Transportation expects to begin the first phase of a development project designed to make Atlanta's Fulton Industrial Business District a key southeastern rail-centric transportation hub.

The Class I plans to spend about $500,000 and eight weeks improving the industrial park's infrastructure, including the installation of 7,000 cross and 1,700 switch ties, and several track panels and turnouts. CSXT also expects to improve the park's yard and storage tracks to increase capacity and improve operating maneuverability, according to a prepared statement.

The business district houses more than 40 companies that annually ship or receive more than 8,000 carloads of various commodities, including food products, metals, paper and packaging products.

In first-half 2004, CSXT plans to begin providing park customers more frequent and custom-designed switching services. The railroad also expects to jointly develop projects with business district partners.
