Today, San Joaquin Valley Railroad Co. plans to dedicate the completion of the $14.2 million Cross Valley Rail Corridor Project, which entailed upgrading 45 track miles between Huron and Visalia, Calif.

Designed to improve service and accommodate 286,000-pound rail cars, the project is expected to create industrial-development opportunities for the 312-mile, RailAmerica Inc.-owned short line.

The project was led by the Joint Powers Authority — formed by the cities of Lemoore, Huron and Visalia — which partnered with the short line and 11 other governmental agencies to fund the trackwork.

"We are improving the air quality and safety of the streets and highways of these communities by reducing truck traffic," said Thomas Schlosser, RailAmerica senior vice president, western corridor, in a prepared statement.
