Connecticut DOT unveils environmental report for Walk Bridge project

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is soliciting comments on an environmental analysis of the proposed replacement of the Walk Railroad Bridge in Norwalk.

The analysis presents alternatives for the replacement of the bridge, and identifies the Long Span Vertical Lift Bridge as the preferred alternative, according to a CTDOT press release.

The proposed project would replace the deteriorating four-span swing bridge that crosses the Norwalk River. Constructed in 1896, the bridge is part of MTA Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line, which also is used by Amtrak and by the Providence & Worcester Railroad Co. for freight service.

The bridge's condition has been extensively documented, including a fatigue analysis in 2005 that indicated major portions of the bridge have exceeded their fatigue life, according to the environmental analysis report. The electrical systems generally are obsolete, and the mechanical systems are deteriorating.

Comments on the report will be accepted through Oct. 21. A public hearing on the proposed project will be held Oct. 6.
