The city of Coralville, Iowa, recently awarded a more than $8.7 million contract to Peterson Contractors Inc. to perform flood protection work along a Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway Co. (CRANDIC) line that was damaged by floodwaters in 2008.

The project calls for constructing a flood protection system along CRANDIC’s corridor from an Iowa River Power Co. parking lot to Rocky Shore Drive in Coralville. The project’s cost will total about $11.7 million, according to the city.

In August 2009, the city received about $7.2 million in federal funding for the project from the Economic Development Administration. The city also received $2.5 million through a Community Development Block Grant.
