Rail News: Maintenance Of Way
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), New Jersey Transit and Amtrak are seeking options to replace or repair a 100-year-old Northeast Corridor bridge that spans New Jersey’s Hackensack River. The three agencies jointly will prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) to determine how to best improve capacity on the Amtrak-owned Portal Bridge, which connects the Newark, N.J., and New York City metropolitan areas.
Built in 1910, the two-track bridge handles 393 NJ Transit and 51 Amtrak trains daily. The FRA, NJ Transit and Amtrak will determine whether to retain the existing structure and build a new bridge with two or three additional tracks; modify the existing bridge to improve safety and possibly add a second bridge; or remove the bridge and replace it.
The agencies will accept public comments on the scope of the EIS through Jan. 31.
