Genesee & Wyoming reopens derailment-damaged bridge in Australia

Yesterday, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) announced it reopened the Edith River Bridge in Australia’s Northern Territory that was damaged after a Genesee & Wyoming Australia Pty Ltd. (GWA) train derailed Dec. 27 because of flooding associated with Cyclone Grant. Regular train service to Darwin will resume today, GWI officials said in a prepared statement
Tests and validations of the structure under various axle loads showed the bridge can again accommodate train traffic. In addition, the river receded to a level that permitted GWA workers to remove three intermodal containers, which had been submerged since the derailment.
The bridge’s reopening was delayed twice after workers found hidden damage to the structure during the repair process, GWI officials said. Crews needed to perform additional strengthening and restoration work.
