Huron Central starts trackwork project; Arkansas industrial park spur lands federal grant

Yesterday, the Huron Central Railway (HCRY) marked the start of a project designed to rehabilitate portions of a 173-mile line from Sudbury to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, including a branch from McKerrow to Espanola, Ontario.
The Canadian government and province of Ontario each will provide up to $15 million for the more than $33 million project, with the short line covering the remainder.
HCRY has awarded contracts to Swift Railroad Contractors Corp. to replace 140,000 ties and tamp, line and surface 200 track miles; and M’Anishnabek Industries Inc. to supply and spread 125,000 tons of ballast, and provide ballast equipment and a heavy rail truck.
The Sudbury-to-Sault Ste. Marie line provides direct freight-rail access to 26 communities and First Nations areas, and indirect rail access to numerous other northeastern Ontario communities.
Owned by Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI), HCRY moves pulp and paper products, chemicals, petroleum products, steel and scrap metals, and interchanges with CN and Canadian Pacific.
Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Mike Ross (D-Ark.) and Sens. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) and John Boozman (R-Ark.) yesterday announced a $1 million federal grant to help fund the construction of an industrial rail spur in the Clark County Industrial Park in Gum Springs, Ark.
The $2.3 million project is being developed through a regional collaboration between the Southwest Regional Intermodal Authority, Clark County Industrial Park Council and the Economic Development Corporation of Clark County. The grant will be provided by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration.
“This investment will help the region better serve employers in the area and will help attract new businesses, adding even more jobs,” said Ross in a prepared statement.
