LIRR to launch bridge rehab project; Amtrak to replace track in East River tunnels

Next month, MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) plans to launch a $26.2 million project designed to rehabilitate three bridges in Hampton Bays. The project will be financed by the Federal Transit Administration and New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) capital program.
Work on the North Highway Bridge, Montauk Highway Bridge and Shinnecock Canal Bridge, all built a century ago, is expected to take two years to complete and extend the life of each bridge by 35 to 40 years, LIRR officials said in a prepared statement.
LIRR inspections found that the bridges’ superstructures are in “fair to good condition,” but in need of waterproofing and painting, they said. Substructures, including abutments, wing walls and pedestals, are in poor to fair condition, LIRR officials said. The project calls for repairing all superstructure and substructure elements. Above-deck waterproofing, drainage system, bearings and bridge seats also will be replaced.
LIRR officials also announced that Amtrak will begin a multi-year project on Saturday to replace track in all four of the East River tunnels. MTA officials urged Amtrak to upgrade the track to improve service reliability, LIRR officials said.
The project, which is scheduled for completion in 2015, calls for total track structure work in each tunnel to be replaced. Work will be performed during weekend hours.
