New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has applied the FASTRACK initiative to complete subway infrastructure repairs along MTA New York City Transit’s (NYCT) seven-mile Lexington Avenue Line.

The FASTRACK initiative is a new way to complete subway maintenance by suspending train service over a segment of a subway line to provide workers uninterrupted access to tracks, signals, cables, lighting, third-rail components and platform edges, MTA and NYCT officials said in a prepared statement.

During four consecutive weeknights, hundreds of MTA workers worked through the night to clean, inspect, repair and replace subway infrastructure along the Lexington Line, they said. During that time, more than 300 tasks were completed, from rail replacement to roadbed cleaning to the scraping and painting of ceilings over tracks and platforms. Such work had not been completed in several years.

“FASTRACK is a major improvement in the way we perform subway maintenance and a perfect example of what can be accomplished when labor and management work as a team to improve the system,” said NYCT President Thomas Prendergast.

The next FASTRACK overnight closure will be conducted Feb. 13-17 along the Broadway/Seventh Avenue line.
