On Aug. 17, Metra plans to kick off a major tie replacement and track resurfacing project. The commuter railroad's crews will replace 17,500 ties and resurface track along a 25-mile stretch of the Rock Island Line between Blue Island and Joliet, Ill., Metra officials said in a press release."This project is a part of the regular maintenance necessary to keep our rail lines in the best condition possible. Tracks and ties are the foundation of the railroad and must be maintained or replaced on a regular basis, " said Don Orseno, Metra's executive director and chief executive officer.Meanwhile, Metra today will begin replacing portions of the platforms at its station in Berwyn, Ill. That project calls for replacing sections of both inbound and outbound platforms located between Oak Park and Grove avenues, and will cost $350,000 to $400,000. Construction is expected to last for three months, Metra officials said.
