Next week, Metra will kick off a major tie replacement and track resurfacing project on its Electric District line to University Park.

The Chicago-area commuter railroad will replace 10,000 ties and perform resurfacing work over a 17-mile stretch of track between Kensington/115th Street and University Park stations. In addition, Metra will replace six switches at its Richton Park Yard and rail at Randolph Street and 18th Street.

The total cost of the work is $1.5 million, Metra officials said in a press release.

"Projects like these are the foundation of reliable service," said Metra Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Don Orseno. "Keeping to a regular schedule of track maintenance allows us to continue to provide service at the speeds and levels our customers expect."

The agency's trains will run on a modified schedule to make way for construction Aug. 22 through Oct. 1. Crews will work seven days a week, with most of the work occurring between the weekday morning and evening rush hours and on weekends.
