Metra next month will complete a project to replace 10,000 ties along the Rock Island Line's Beverly Branch.

The project began late last week and will continue through June 10. Crews also will replace pedestrian crossings along the branch, including any rail that shows signs of deterioration due to salt spread during the winter months.

During the weekend of May 19-20, the Chicago commuter railroad will shut down service on the Beverly Branch to speed up the tie replacement work, agency officials said in a press release.

"In this case, taking the branch line out of service for those two days will allow us to replace significantly more ties in a shorter period of time, thereby limiting the overall impact to our customers and making much more efficient use of our workforce," said Metra Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director Jim Derwinski.

The project is part of Metra's $84.8 million construction program for 2018, which was unveiled last month.
