The North Carolina Department of Transportation has awarded a $16.3 million contract to NJR Group Inc. to perform a grade separation project at the Rogers Lake Road crossing in Kannapolis.
Located on the North Carolina Railroad Co. and Norfolk Southern Railway lines, the project calls for construction of a bridge to separate the road from the tracks and closing the grade crossing, NCDOT officials said in a press release.
Construction is expected to begin in May 2023 and end in spring 2026, department officials said.
Meanwhile, last week NCDOT received the first test train for Charlotte’s new Gateway Station. NCDOT recently completed Phase 1, which called for building tracks, bridges, a boarding platform and supporting infrastructure that will allow the train to access the new station, department officials said. The train is initially being used to test clearances for the new platform.
The city of Charlotte has contracted with a developer to complete Phase 2 of the project, which calls for construction of the station as part of a multi-use building with retail, residential and commercial spaces and connections to other regional transportation lines. That work is expected to be completed and the station operational "in the next few years," a NCDOT official said in an email.
The new station will host Amtrak and CityLYNX passenger-rail service.
