NJ Transit calls for bids to fill track-side canal

New Jersey Transit last week announced a call for bids on the first phase of construction to fill and level a canal adjacent to the Hudson Bergen light-rail tracks and the Hoboken yards.

In 2012, a storm surge from Hurricane Sandy created a long canal alongside the tracks at NJ Transit’s Hoboken yards in New Jersey to overflow its banks. The overflow resulted in significant flood damage to the yard and required weeks of remediation, according to an NJ Transit press release.

The latest call for construction seeks a company to fill the canal and eliminate it as a conduit for flood water, effectively allowing NJ Transit to operate train service longer into, and recover more quickly from, storms. The canal was formerly used for shipping traffic, but has been inactive for more than 40 years.

A second phase of construction calls for installation of six new tracks over the filled canal to service three ADA-accessible, high-level boarding platforms above expected flood levels to and from Hoboken Terminal.

STV Inc. will manage both construction phases of the project, which is part of NJ Transit’s infrastructure resilience program.
