Rail News: Maintenance Of Way
Last week, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Board of Commissioners authorized spending up to $30 million to build a railroad bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway's tracks in Secaucus, N.J., to eliminate traffic bottlenecks.
To be completed in 2006, the bridge is designed to improve access for trucks and cars traveling to and from a new eastern spur of the New Jersey Turnpike, and trucks moving to and from a Croxton, N.J., rail yard.
"This project is in line with the Port Authority's mandate to improve regional mobility and to spur economic development," said Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Chairman Anthony Coscia in a prepared statement. "It will greatly enhance the flow of commercial traffic through a primarily industrial area."
Currently, freight trains interrupt vehicle traffic on New County Road for extended time periods, port authority officials said.
