More than 50 rail and 23 transit projects are included in the final draft of North Carolina's 2020-2029 State Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP), which was unveiled last week.

The overall STIP also includes 1,319 highway, 86 aviation, 234 bike and pedestrian and six ferry projects selected on statewide, regional and division levels, North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said in a press release.

Projects were prioritized based on technical data, as well as input from local officials and residents.

Included in the draft STIP are more than 200 projects worth $2.5 billion that are expected to be awarded in fiscal year 2019-2020.

The state's Board of Transportation is expected to consider final approval of the draft plan in September.
