The Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) recently approved a $101,289 grant to the Ohio Central Railroad to help fund grade crossing and derail projects at two Metalico Inc. facilities in Ohio.
At Metalico’s facility in Akron, where a private grade crossing will be restored. At Metalico's Youngstown site, the funds will be used to replace a split-rail derail with a switch-point derail. The total project cost for both projects is $168,818, of which Metalico will contribute $67,529, according to a ORDC press release.
Metalico is one of the nation’s largest ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal processors.
The Akron project will restore a deteriorated, internal plant grade crossing used to access the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway. The project will also ensure proper gauging of the line in the area and will include tamping and joint tightening, according to the release. The total cost of this project is $67,520. ORDC has committed $50,640 toward that project.
The Youngstown project entails replacing existing split rail derail to the industry-standard switch-point derail. The project will also correct gauge as needed, tighten bolts and tamp approximately 6,000 feet of rail. The total cost of that project is $101,298, of which ORDC has committed $50,649.
