CSX Transportation recently award RailWorks Corp. a more than $17 million contract to construct and extend nine sidings in three states on the Class I’s Chicago-to-Florida corridor.

RailWorks will rehabilitate and construct 69,000 feet of track and install 17 turnouts. In December, the company began building a two-mile siding in Bartlett, Ga., and rehabilitating and extending a two-mile siding in Lilly, Ga. RailWorks also recently began extending two sidings in Tennessee and constructing five sidings in Kentucky.

The projects are part of CSXT’s capacity expansion program announced last year. The railroad plans to spend between $1.3 billion and $1.4 billion each of the next two years to expand capacity between Chicago and Florida, and between Albany, N.Y., and northern New Jersey.

Founded in 1998, RailWorks provides track construction and other contracting services to North American freight and passenger railroads.
