SYSTRA proposes upgrades to Metro-North's traction power system

Just a few weeks after completing a traction power system study for MTA Long Island Rail Road, SYSTRA Engineering Inc. has done the same for sister New York MTA railroad Metro-North.

The study will help Metro-North officials determine how to upgrade traction power to handle projected service increases through 2020.

The engineering firm used its RAILSIM software to create a computer simulation of the entire Metro-North system, including all substations, overhead conductors, running rails, feeder and return cables, inter-track bonds and phase breaks. The company also simulated all of the railroad’s trains.

SYSTRA engineers and analysts used the data to identify traction power system areas that need reinforcing. The company recommended that Metro-North build additional high-voltage substations, and reconfigure or upgrade auto-transformer substations.
